  • Lost capture ability after proapp 2008-03 update

Posted by Randall M on October 15, 2008 at 4:39 am

    Greetings,

This afternoon, in preparation for my next project I decided to match FCP versions with a local post facility, so I installed the Pro Applications Update 2008-03. Now I’ve lost any capability to preview or capture any video. All I see in the log and capture window is color bars and the label “Preview Disabled” no matter what codec I choose. Is this because I am still on OS 10.4.11 and I should not have done the update?

Hope I don’t have to reload FCP studio.. arg.

    System specs as follows:
    FCP Studio 2 running on
    MacPro 3 Ghz Dual core
    4 GB memory
    lots of gig storage left
    AJA io as capture device
    Betacam and DVcam decks

Any help or insight would be appreciated.

Most likely it has something to do with the AJA software. We have an Intensity Pro card and every so often something happens and we have to uninstall the software and then reinstall. Even that doesn’t seem to help until I unplug the deck and plug it back in while it is on and the Log and Capture window is open. In fact, try that first. Just unplug and then plug in while the deck is on and capture is open.

You can also go into your preferences on A/V and see if the digitizer is there for AJA. If it says ‘missing’ for sure just reinstall your AJA software.

Todd, thanks for replying. I know what you’re talking about – unplugging and plugging back in to wake up the log and capture or give it a fresh kick in the rear, but that’s not working in this case unfortunately. I told the AJA forum that I also installed the AJA ProIo control panel today and it asked me to update my firmware. I followed instructions in the release notes, but when I went back to log and capture to test playback and capture (as the notes suggested)- nothing. Of course I had not tested after installing the proapps update so I added to my confusion. I’ll probably have to give AJA a call tomorrow. Appreciate your help.

Rats! Best of luck. I have been trying to sort out a problem with one of our machines since 1 pm and I have had no luck. The project file won’t load. Do you know of anywhere FCP puts project caches or anything like that? I’ve tried to delete preferences but it seems like it is still trying to reference something else.

hope you get it figured out.

Todd, FCP cache is kept under your username/library/preferences/finalcutpro user data

There’s an obj and prof cache in there, but be careful. I would not recommend to start tossing stuff unless you’re absolutely sure what your throwing away. I’m sure if some of the more experienced FCP folks were in here they’d be able to better define. It’s been so long since I’ve done that- probably back on version 5.0. I haven’t had to do anything like that since Studio Pro, but I know your feeling- when you’ve been chasing something since 1 p.m. It all started at 4:30 for me. ha.

    Best,

I appreciate the info. I have used that folder and the contents before to solve minor glitches. Unfortunately they didn’t work this time. I resorted to reinstalling FCP and it did the trick. Just wrapping up the installation now.

best of luck with your problem. i wish i had more to offer.

Reinstall your drivers for the capture card. Might be best to uninstall them first, then reinstall.

    Shane,

Thanks for your note. Yes I eventually figured out that I needed to uninstall drivers first and then reinstall the drivers- after several tries. ha. But today AJA tech support actually directed me to back down to the previous firmware, which I did so through their archived software download page. However that was just an insurance policy. I think the tide turned when I uninstalled before reinstalling drivers. So in effect you are right on.

Big thanks for the confirmation of my path.
    Best,
    Randall
