Lossy Text in Videos
Hi guys! I’m new here. I had a question that has been straining my brain and I was hoping for some assistance.
I’ve been trying to make a production using some video I captured using WM Capture. The captured video has some text in it, as seen here in the raw captured video:

However, when I import the video into Premiere and work it into a larger project, no compression settings I choose are able to preserve the text in the video, and the text always distorts and looks terrible, as seen here in a clip from my project:

The only way I can get the final project to come out with decent looking text is to do a very high quality .mov export, but upon uploading that to youtube, youtube makes it look terrible again.
Any ideas on settings, codecs, etc. that can get this text to display properly? Thanks in advance.

The key with interface captures is that they have to be used at the resolution you captured them (sometimes a very specific scale factor will work via dumb luck, but basically the way you maintain their quality is not to scale them.
Most of us who do a ton of this set a screen capture resolution and an edit workflow specifically to preserve the capture clip’s clarity.

Hey Tim. I actually did capture at the same resolution I am working with. As you can see, the raw video and the output video are the same resolution and size. The only difference is the degradation in quality.
Any other clues about what might cause this?

So the screen res settings, the capture res settings, the edit framesize, and the output framesize are all identical? (I’m on a phone and can’t really see any attached pics)
The fact you have to go to a large bitrate output file to make it readable suggests that it’s being scaled somewhere in the process.
If you’re capturing to wmv, that’s not going to have the quality of a Camtasia capture to Techsmith’s codec for instance.
You Tube will scale the image to whatever they use if you don’t output the exact framesize they use. Very few screen cap videos I’ve seen that are very clear on You Tube.
