  • Loss of superwhite effects on export in AE

Posted by Russ Keith on June 6, 2008 at 9:31 pm

    Hi there.

I have created some effects using 32 bpc “superwhite” text and applying fast blur and animating opacity in After Effects CS3 but they are all lost when I export the file. I have tried exporting in several formats but the result is always the same – plain white blurred text instead of the neon-like effect I see in the preview. From what I understand, the appearance of these effects should be preserved in the rendering. Can anyone tell me why they are not and if I can remedy this?

    Thanks,

    Russ

anyway you can post a screen shot of pre-render and a still render? my guess is that you are not rendering to rgb 0-255 in what ever codec you have chosen.

Are you previewing at +0.0 Exposure in AE? The exposure preview is for preview purposes only and does not affect a render.

    Hello

and thanks for looking at my problem.

I’m afraid I’m a bit of a forum virgin so don’t know how to post the images. If you could tell me how I’d be glad to.

    thanks,

    Russ

    are you exporting or rendering?

RENDER don’t export… with that said, I haven’t had any problem rendering out with the Animation codec and getting 32 bit renders to look right with the superwhite technique. If you do that, you can then convert that footage to another compressed format.

I think you are choosing a format that is not 32 bit.

    Hello Ron,

and thank you so much for your suggestion. I have been rendering as well as exporting but couldn’t find bit depth settings in any format I tried. I’m using a PC and don’t know if that makes any difference. HOWEVER – this time round I rendered to uncompressed AVI and lo and behold, all effects preserved. Then it was just a matter of importing the resulting file back into AE and adding the sounds effects and I was able to produce a tiny FLV file with all the superwhite effects intact.

I am very grateful to you and to the others who took an interest in this problem. I’ve been working with computers since 1967 (no, that’s not a typo) and this is the first time I have registered with a forum to seek help. It won’t be the last.

    Thanks again,

    Russ.

    Hi,

I’m not sure if this is the correct way to close off this post but I just wanted to make sure that anyone who tried to help me with this issue received my thanks.

As I wrote in my thanks you message to Ron Coy who suggested a simple method which worked for me, this is my first time registering with a forum to ask for help but it won’t be my last.

    Regards,

    Russ.

There are no 32 bit per channel video codecs that I’m aware of. To preserve float (32bpc) values you’d have to render to an image sequence that supports 32bpc (PSD, TIFF, etc.).

When you render to another codec such as Animation (which I believe supports up to 16bpc) you are eliminating the super-white values, but the effects of the super-white values in the AE comp are preserved… glows and such should appear as they did in the composition, but the ‘white hot’ center of the glow will be clipped at 1.0… Where as it could’ve ranged up to 100.0 or more in float (32bpc).
