    Hello ~

I have been having a problem where I import files from a PC to my Mac and when I import into FCP the video file loses it’s audio. I drag down into the timeline and the audio track doesn’t exist, just video. It happens on some AVIs and MPEGs but it is not universal. Any suggestions?

    thanks

    John

sounds like an unsupported audio codec.

As Chris said, it may be an unsupported audio codec. Similarly, it could be a file with “muxed” audio … the video and audio are contained within a single track instead of separate tracks.

If that is the case, you’ll need to transcode the file to both a video and audio codec that FCP will recognize as separate tracks. Sometimes, you can open the file in QuickTime, export just the audio as an AIF, bring the AIF into FCP and link it to the video in the timeline, but that’s often more work than just transcoding.
