losing audio sync during playback
I have been editing on assorted flavors of Avid since circa 1995. I am experiencing a problem on one of my client’s systems that I have not seen before. I edit a few magazine style programs for them- hour long programs with 12ish minute segments. To get these programs to air, they are played back in real time, from the timeline and digitized into a playback system for their cable channel. All has been working swimmingly for about 2 years. Until now. The last 2 programs have developed audio sync problems during playback only. The first, at about 35 minutes into the program, the second at about 45 minutes. The timelines play fine if I place the playhead at just before the problem area and play from there. It is only when the program is played back from the beginning that the audio slip occurs. And it happens at the same place every time. It drops out for a moment, and when it comes back it is out of sync with the video. I have looked frame by frame for something that might be causing the problem. I have had problems with dropouts in the past. But here, no. Everything looks fine. Everything is rendered. The timeline plays fine during the editing process. It is only when played from the beginning that this problem occurs. It’s almost like the Avid is getting tired. I thought it was a fluke the first time it happened, but now that it has happened twice in a row, I’m thinking something has gone wrong. My work around has been to render a quicktime movie, import that back into the Avid, place that on a timeline, render, and play that. That works, but is adding a whole lot of time to the playback process. No new hardware or software has been installed recently. Any thoughts?
