Looking to combine Generated Media and Event FX automatically in Sony Vegas Pro 12
Posted by Mike Yoneda on August 11, 2013 at 5:41 pmI use the Generated Media Solid Color with a certain Preset and the Cookie Cutter Event FX to animate highlighting a soccer player for a recruiting video. Is there a simple way to automated the selection of the Generated Media and Event FX so I don’t have to manually select them each time I want to insert them on the timeline? This would greatly help speed up my editing and save a lot of keystrokes that are repetitive for the selections.
I do have UltimateS Pro 4 so if there is a feature to make like a macro to combine these steps, that would be great. Otherwise, if Vegas Pro 12 already has that capability and I just haven’t found that feature, please let me know.

Are you putting a Solid Colour under the video? So to make the soccer player appear moving on a Sea of say, BLUE?
Trying to understand your visuals here . . ?

August 11, 2013 at 8:04 pmI am using the solid color on top of the video and setting the transparency to .4. I then use the cookie cutter to create an oval to highlight the soccer player. I then use the animate to move the oval to highlight the player for a short interval.
I would just like to automate the insertion part of doing the solid color and cookie cutter together. The rest of the key frame animate would be customized for each clip.

August 12, 2013 at 5:42 amThanks, that helps me. I think I may have a solution for you which combines the results you want in a single Event’s Preset to be reused time and time again.
However, and so I know that I am “barking up the right tree“, what do you use to Track the Soccer player? Track Motion or Pan/Crop? Or what?

August 12, 2013 at 6:09 amHi Graham,
I use keyframing to animate the oval cookie cutter. I normally make it for about 1/2 second to 1 second in length and use the Center and Animate to get to the keyframing section and to highlight each clip as an overlay on top of the clip.
The movement of the oval is customized for each clip but the insertion of the Solid Color and Cookie Cutter hopefully can be made into a preset.

August 12, 2013 at 6:25 amAh! – I just re-read your second posting: So you use the Animate within the CCutter to position the Oval– right, I get it. I wanted you to have a single-hit combo.
If you use P/C or Track Motion to be the active way to position the “overlay” you can use the combo as a Preset and THEN you don’t need to repeat and repeat, and so on….. The Animate over time within the CCutter is then SET for that Preset, which would then need you to replace all the movement Animates again!
OK, unless somebody can spot a flaw in my logic, and has an alternative to what I suggest, then at least do try P/C or Track Motion. And in this way you can have “Mike’s follow that Soccer player Gen Med PLUS the CCutter Preset” ready to use and reuse without the need to have to keep assembling from the start.
I’ve made many FX-Packages that I can use and reuse without the need to re-invent. I wanted to do the same for you. The trouble we have here is that the Event – the GenMed – and FX – the Cookie Cutter – can be set as a preset, but then going and changing the Position of the Oval, within CCutter is then breaking the one-to-one relationship of the FX, and that, right there is our issue. Soooo, we need an alternative. Presently that’s the use of the Pan/Crop or Track Motion.
Now, as you say, a Macro or a fundamental reassessment of the Vegas Code to allow for this Combo to be created, then sure.
I really hope that some of what I’ve written makes sense?? – At least I’ve provided an alternative.
Cheers

August 12, 2013 at 6:54 amOk, here’s using Track Motion. I wasn’t aware that Tadpoles played for Man U, but why not?

August 12, 2013 at 7:24 amI will try using the P/C or Track Motion. Now, how do I go about saving the GM and FX as a single preset? For the GM, I need to have it set to Solid Color and a Transparency of 0.4. For the Cookie Cutter, I have one set for Oval Side as the Shape and Cut Away All But Section as the Method. I just need to combine the GM and FX as a preset.

You can set the GM as with its OWN Preset – Soccer Blue, and then set the C.Cutter with its OWN Preset – Soccer Oval. These come together as, say, your “Soccer Tracking” Event, which you can place above your actual Video. As I attempted to explain, the CCutter’s method of Tracking would restrict its ease of use elsewhere – you’d have to keep replacing the positional KeyFrames. What I’m suggesting you do is to utilize your present approach BUT use alternative/another method of positional Tracking. This means you can then reuse your Event of the Combo of GenMed(Soccer Blue Preset)+C.Cutter(Soccer Oval).
Here’s what I did and then re-use that same event and apply Track Motion:-

August 12, 2013 at 8:28 amGraham,
Are your two saved Presets ever saved together as an event or whenever I need to use them, I have to insert them one at a time?
I just found out I once I create one combined event, I can copy and paste it and just re-do the keyframe for tracking. That has saved me a lot of steps to keep on recreating the event.
I’m just trying to automate as much as I can to save keystrokes since it is so repetitive the “old” way I was doing it. My cut and paste method works if I continue to use the Cookie Cutter keyframe but I do want to explore your method if it will save me time in the long run.

Exactly! – And that’s what I’ve been driving at. Now you can Track Motion that COMBO Event! Easy!
