Looking for insight on GY-HM100U and JVC, pre-purchase
Can JVC forum members provide me with critical feedback on both the GY-HM100U and JVC?
I’m seriously considering the GY-HM100U. It’s price fits my budget and JVC has the sense to directly address the workflow issue. But my history is with Sony and Canon and with much larger cameras (Beta, DVCAM).
I’ll be doing primarily corporate work with this camera, destined for DVD, the web and ultimately, Blu-Ray. Now and then, I’ll go off the grid and do some unusual fast-action work, generally for commercials.
I’m wondering – What are the cameras shortfalls? How is JVC in terms of customer service? How does a camera this small handle? Is anyone using a brace for shoulder work? How good is the motion control and autofocus? Etc.
Any insight greatly appreciated. I have already ready the existing posts here and am seeking even more input.

Hello,
We are placing an order for our third GY-HM700 plus one GY-HM100U. I too would like to hear about anyone’s experience with and technical performance of the 100U, as well as JVC’s customer service.
So far we’ve had great performance from both 700s and support from both JVC’s regional rep and engineering staff has been very good.
Our applications are education and training.

I have about 12 hours on the GY-HM100U I purchased, so my experience thus far is limited. Like you, I’m switching from larger cameras, eg., Beta and DVCAM.
Technically, the GY-HM100U produces a good image in basic well-lit situations. Do not purchase this camera if you need it for low-light situations, although CNN recently purchased 100+ for reporters who may have to cover news (some in low-light, but they probably don’t mind the inherent noise in +9 and +18 db when the story is really newsworthy.)
I purchased the camera based on its workflow attributes with FCP and its price range. I like the camera but am having to re-address certain issues, such as lack of a 3-ring lens (focus, iris, focal length). The ability to go directly to FCP is great. It’s the smallest pro camera out there, so its fantastic for tight situations. You can put this camera an inch in front of something and it focuses.
Do NOT purchase this camera for advanced shooters who do tough jobs such as camera motion combined with close-focus product work or who need to shoot quality HD in low light situations. Otherwise I think you’ll enjoy it.

Thanks for the very helpful info on the GY-HM100U. Its size, portability, and work flow with FCP will make it a good fit with our 700s.
I don’t know where to post this one: We’re purchasing a Newtek Tricaster TCXD 300 switcher. I’m looking for the same user experience feedback.
Any recommendations?
