  • Looking for advice to give to offline editors re- consolidating clips

Posted by Justin Tan on August 2, 2006 at 2:30 am

Hey all, I’ve gone through the search and can’t seem to find step by step method to do what I need my clients to do.

Just a little BG: My main role has been to online final cut projects. The problem has been that when I try to capture the final cut project it captures a lot more than required.

It looks like the off line editor has captured one big clip, and then sub clipped it. the project looks pretty clean – IE only clips used in the time line are there in the project, but FCP still tries to capture hour long clips.

I’ve looked around media manager and can’t seem to find a way to make it so that all clips used in the timeline are made into individual clips so that when it comes to recapturing, I jus capture what is required…

any ideas? is this a limitation of FCP?

Offline editor should go to Modify>Make Sequence Clips Independent in the offline project before handing it off to you for recapturing.

Hi Kevin, thx for the response.

I have tried the followng (Using FCP 5.04):

selected all the sub clips in the bin -> selected modify = there is no option to make independent.

selected all the clips in the timeline -> selected modify = make independent is greyed out

selected all the clips in the timeline -> right clicked => selected make independent.

after I did that I made all the media offline and tried recapturing but it seems to only want to capture 4.04 sec (my sub clip lengths were more than that)

Also tried using media manager to create a new project for me with the same out come unfortunately…

You might want to try creating a new bin, dup the working sequence into that bin, make independent, then, open the new sequence, select all in the sequence, copy, paste into the new bin, dig from there. You can sort by reel# etc no matter what bin the clip came from…

    It has worked for me.

    what you didn’t try was:

select the SEQUENCE in the browser,
    Modify>Make Sequence Clips Independent.
you can right click on it, too for that matter.

if your editors don’t want to make their sequence clips independent,
    copy the sequence,
    paste into a new project.
    Media Manage.

    cheers,

I find that one of the easiest ways to do this is to take the sequence, export a xml list. Then start a new project and import the xml and it makes a new sequence and a bin that has all your offline clips in it. Then batch away. This way your original project remains intact and you won’t make any mistakes that might muck up your original media.

    Nice one Peter.

Yes, I left out the crucial detail that you select your sequence first, then choose to Modify>Making Seq. Independent.

Justin, I am mostly dealing with recapture of offline in online so I know what you are trying to acheive. Here is my workflow

Copy the final sequence into a new project. I usually name it as “(title) Online”. Right mouse click on the sequence and select media manager. Select ‘create offline’. Choose the desired sequence compression for online. Deselect ‘include master clips outside selection’. Select ‘delete unused media from duplicated items’. Select ‘handles’ and set the size you want. Deselect ‘include affilite clips outside selection’. Deselect ‘include non active multiclip angles’.

Chose the destination drive to save this new project to. Save and then open. You will notice that all is offline as expected, sequence is set for correct compression. Select sequence and batch capture. This method makes a project with only the clips that are in the final cut with handles. As a further refinement I delete the audio before the media manage and recapture just pics, which is why I make a copy of the original sequence.

A mix down aif from the offline is my audio companion during the long hours of grading and making titles safe. Graphic element like jpegs and high res QT movs need to be reconnected.
