  • Long Panasonic P2 takes were clipped when converted in quicktimes w/HD Log

Posted by James Fletcher on June 22, 2006 at 9:21 pm

I used two Panasonic AG-HVX200 cameras over the weekend shooting in the DVCPRO HD 720p24 format with 8 gig P2 cards. An assistant, using a macintosh laptop, took our material off the P2 cards with HD Log and converted them to quicktimes. He saved the files to two fresh out of the box 500 gb G-Raids.

Now that I am beginning to edit with FCP 5.0.4, I have noticed that no take is longer than 00:06:12:19. There are several takes that were supposed to be 8 to 11 minutes long, and they are all exactly 00:06:12:19 in length. Our computer assistant recalls seeing 11 minute long files as he pulled the material off of the P2 cards, but none of our resultant quicktimes are longer than 00:06:12:19. Unfortunately, our assistant did not save the raw computer data separately.

What caused this calmnity? Is there a setting in HD log that could have caused the shortening of the shots? Is this the result of an OS X computer file size limit? Our truncated files seem to range from 2.16 to 2.25gb in size.

We are planning to use these cameras again this weekend and we need to know what went wrong.

    Thanks.

Will all do respect, wouldn’t you be calling the company first?

We’ve called our rental house, they’ve called vendors. At the moment, no one seems to know the answer to this, hence, my posting on this forum.

Has anyone else had this problem? How can it be avoided?

The latest version should work for you: https://www.imagineproducts.com/Files/Macintosh/hdlog_update.dmg

You can get the passphrase for the update by sending a message to Imagine’s support: https://imagineproducts.com/support.htm
(or support at imagineproducts dot com)

Is it possible this is the 2GB file size limitation rearing its ugly head. Not sure about P2 cards, but certainly with the Firestore a new MXF file is created every 2GB but neither FCP, Avid or HD Log are able to recognize this and create a connected media file. I don’t know what filesystem the P2 cards use, but with the Firstore its FAT32 hence the 2GB limit.

As you were shooting 720p24, the length of the shot is longer, as when I was doing 1080i50 recording the length was closer to 2min 18sec when the break happens.

If this is the case you should have all the media, its just that they will be split into lots of sections. A very irritating oversight in the design IMHO, but I’m sure one that will be rectified at some point by the NLE guys. If thats not it, then ignore everything I just said 🙂
