  • Log and Transfer question

Posted by Sam Lesante jr. on March 24, 2009 at 1:05 pm

I usually use Final Cut Pro with a P2 drive (AJ-PCD20) for my log and transfer with no problem.

Our employees have final cut express version 4.0.1 running on an imac version 10.4.11 with 2.4 core duo, 2gb that I want to setup to log and transfer via firewire from our Panasonic P2 AG-HPX170.

So, first off, is it possible to go right from the cam’s firewire into the imac and log and transfer P2 footage? If so, what’s the process? All I’ve seen online and in the manual is AVCHD transfer but that’s not what I have.

Here’s what I tried so far.

I connected the firewire to the cam and to the imac, turned on the imac, turned on the cam, switched the cam to 1394 device in the menu and then went to pc mode where it said 1394 connect and i can see the 2 drive icons on the desktop.

Then I went into the final cut setup and changed it to dv-firewire basic. The capture scratch was already set to the only HHD on the computer. I went to File>Log and transfer and did not see any files in the window.

    That’s where I’m at.

    TIA

    Sam

Log and transfer in FCE can only be done for AVCHD material and only via USB. It does not support DVCPRO HD in any way; the codec is only available with FCP; nor does it capture DV in any way except via FireWire from tape. Basically this camera does not work with this application.

    All the best,

I guess that would be the problem then.

The manual that panasonic sends with the camera is very confusing and misleading.

It shows on pg. 77 how to do an “AVC” transfer from the cam to the computer using either USB or firewire (which is weird because this cam does not do avc). Then it shows how to do a tape transfer which is the old 200 model and not the 170. It doesn’t mention anything about not being compatible with the P2 codec.

    Oh, well. Thanks again.

P2 is not a codec; it’s a memory card format. You can capture any variety of formats and codecs on a P2 card. I didn’t mean to say the camera couldn’t do DVCPRO HD, I meant the FCE application does not support DVCPRO HD.

So when you say FCE does not support DVCPROHD, does that include all the DVCPRO flavors like 25 and 50?

It supports DVCPRO 25, not DVCPRO 50 or DVCPRO HD.
