  • Log And Transfer – 5D M2 DSLR – Does it work?

Posted by Craig Richard on January 12, 2011 at 10:42 pm

Macpro, FCp7, osx 10.6.5, Plug in from Canon for FCP installed, and log and transfer will not see the image (mov) on the camera, nor will the drive come up on the desktop. Is this possible? I can get the .mov out with the canon installed hardware, but would like a more fluid workflow. If anything, what am I doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    Craig

You need to have the FULL card structure intact ball the folders, exactly as the are on the card. And all the MVI files. If you don’t have the structure or those files, L&T won’t work.

I’m not sure what you mean by full card structure, are you saying to reformat the card from the camera? All the files and folders seem to be there, and in l&T I can select Canon from preferences, it just won’t come up anywhere on my desktop, or in l&T.
    Thanks,

You have to copy the files off the card to your HD. Then you point L&T to that folder. You need to be using a Card reader and not the camera. Canon has a utility of its own to offload the files but you do not want to use it.

    Card in Card Reader.
-Copy everything as is from the card to a folder on your HD. (All the folders must be copied as is)
    – In L&T point it to your folder on the HD.

Watch this tutorial on how to work with tapeless media in FCP: Tapeless Workflow for FCP 7 Tutorial

When you backup the tapeless media, you need to back up EVERYTHING…not just the mov files. If you only have the Mov files, you can’t use Log and transfer. You need everything, in the proper card structure, in order for things to work.

Thanks Shane, I’ve been working with tape-less media quite a few years, and am a FCP CT, I know about including all the media and reference files, however, I cannot get the card to show up on the desktop with the FcP plugin, nor copied (all folders) from the canon software (possible it’s corrupted I’m sure) to a drive and have L&T recognize it from there. I’ve reformatted the card, restarted, done all the normal things you do in editorial, and still no luck. Exporting copied mov files to pro res anything then down res seems like more of a pain than it’s worth. Any help would be appreciated.
