    Hi, all!

So, we’re trying to view some footage captured as HDV-to-ProRes 422 23.98p using the SDI out on a Kona LHe to a Sony Luma monitor.

The Kona no likey. It’ll give me still frames just fine, but if I try to play it, I get garbage video… Just a bunch of noise.

1920×1080 plays just fine, and I realize the obvious option would be just to media manage the whole project up to square pixels… And I also realize the irony in viewing a prosumer format through HD-SDI on a professional monitor.

But let’s say that you didn’t have the option to convert all your dailies to 1920, and since the footage is shot, the issue of what format it originated in is beyond your control…

Is there any way to watch 1440×1080 footage in realtime out through HD-SDI on the Kona?

    Thanks!

    Nick

Yep, it does this natively when you play back DVCPro HD 1080i/50 material and HDV native 1080i material. Both are 1440 native anamorphic frame sizes.

Is your HDV material truly 23.98? If it’s showing garbage, then your HDV material is probably playing back at 29.97 so you need to record to ProRes 1080i/29.97 (in NTSC.)

Thanks so much for your response!

The video is true 23.98… Looking at the information in the format tab, here’s what it is:

    Vid Rate: 23.98 fps
    Frame Size: 1440 x 1080
    Compressor: Apple ProRes 422
    Pixel Aspect: HD (1440×1080)
    Field Dominance: None
    Audio: 1 Stereo
    Aud Rate: 48.0 KHz
    Aud Format: 16-bit Integer

I believe those are the only items that would have an effect on the Kona’s ability to play it. Anything here that might indicate why it’s not liking it, or any other helpful information about the footage I could provide, just let me know.

    Thanks!

You need to use the AJA Kona 23.98 PsF settings- NO HDV camera can not output True P in 1080

this is a data format and not a video format. Your video will ALWAYS be 1920 x 1080 when playing out via the Kona Card. THERE is NO SMPTE output for 1440×1080- it does not exist.

“1920×1080 plays just fine, and I realize the obvious option would be just to media manage the whole project up to square pixels… And I also realize the irony in viewing a prosumer format through HD-SDI on a professional monitor.”

OH so it got messed up by not handling all of the files in the same manner and now you have some that at ProRes at full raster and some that ProRes at the original “thin raster” of 1440.

you can reset all of the scaling issues and then re-save the files to solve this.
