    Hey folks –

I am using a CANON XH-A1, going through firewire into Final Cut Pro 7. I’m shooting a series of interviews this week, and want to capture HDV footage live into the FCP over firewire, to save tapes and time. But I can’t find a setting that works, or instructions on this anywhere. I have been using the HDV – 1080i60 Easy Set-Up, but have tried many others.

    Anybody got ideas to help?

First, find a setting that works with capture off tape. The change the device setting to uncontrolled device.

Then put the camera into EE and see if the signal still comes through. Worst case, you might have to run a tape in record to capture live, which will give you a backup in case of disaster or a crash during capture.

Tapes are about $3.00 a pop. So, unless you’re using dozens of tapes, that’s not a big savings. And there’s a benefit to a tape, it’s a backup in case your drive crashes.
