  • LIST OF WHAT’S BROKEN IN 5.1.3/4

Posted by Joe Murray on February 25, 2007 at 10:20 pm

Having looked through the threads on all the problems with FCP 5.1.3, I thought it might be useful to have a thread that consolidates all the things Apple has screwed up with this release, to make things easy for others that are just learning about these issues, including those at Apple who can effect fixes to the problems.

    1. Third party effects that do not work – Boris and Colorista (at least the GUI interface does not work)

    2. 10 bit output – I have to set my Kona-2 or IO La to 8 bit uncompressed output instead of 10 bit, otherwise I get a scrambled screen. This was not the case in 5.1.2.

    3. Relinking to media from previous projects – had a project go completely berserk and relink to incorrect clips

    4. Loss of RT functionality compared to 5.1.2

    5. Possible project corruption issues – not sure if these are specific to 5.1.3 or not

Please feel free to add to this list, and update with whatever else they’ve broken with 5.1.4, when that comes to light.

From what I’ve read a lot of what you’re listing here was fixed in 5.1.4 which is already out. Definitely number 1 on your list was fixed.

Well let’s hope that .4 is a solution, but if it creates problems of its own I will not be surprised. If I’m wrong then I will be glad to let this thread die a quick death.

5.1.4 was not a fix on my machine for Boris troubles. I still cannot open projects pre- BCC 4.1 update, and Title 3D still crashes FCP every time on any project.

I called Boris about it Friday afternoon, they said they were sending me instructions on how to fix and get the “z” added to some of the plugs you told me about Walter, but they either failed to send or it didn’t get here, so I’m still in Boris hell.

Other than that, 5.1.4 seems fine.

When you have capture cards from 3rd party vendors, you should NEVER upgrade until the manufacturer says it is safe to do so. Otherwise you are risking breaking functions of the card, as you discovered.

5.1.3 also broke Automatic Duck Pro Export…5.14 fixed it.

    Fixed Colorista too.

Good point. As of right now AJA hasn’t said anything about the updates, hence I’m still running FCP 5.1.2 here on our systems.

It’s all like that great thread down below says, “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” If you really want to live on the bleeding edge, be prepared for some unexpected consequences.

Its not like Apple will be reading the cow forums.

Yes, Apple does monitor all Apple related forums on the Cow.

I just looked at all posts concerning 5.1.4 and Boris Continuum… I have an Intel MBP that I use for travel and offline with FCP and AE, and my main system is a G5 PowerPC. The posts and Boris’ site claim the 5.1.4 update renders BCC unusable. This was true with my MBP, but not my G5. I checked them and they work. Should they? Am I gonna be lulled into a false sense of security and then one day, with a client breathing down my neck, my BCC effects won’t be there?

Update on boris site seemed to work on the MBP, but we’ll see.

    Any thoughts?

Have you run the Intel patch?

    On the plus side

Well, on the positive side Apple have fixed the….capture HDV footage, and FCP breaks the captured footage into 30 sec clips issue!!

    RT Effects

I agree, something is going on with FCP’s ability to deal with RT effects. I had a dialogue box pop up today, informing me my drives are now too slow to deal with a 5 min video clip of slow moving clouds, (720p 25fps, speeded up by 999%), and one track of audio!!.
Before 5.1.4 I used the same footage, with the same effect, the same audio, and 2 additional layers, and all was fine.

    Capture

I’m still getting problems getting realtime feedback in my capture window. When I scrub through my footage it takes an age for the screen to update. Sometimes the footage won’t even play. To cure the freezes I need to shut down the capture window, and re-open. (JVC HD-50 latest firmware).
Does anyone know the best way to contact Apple and let them know the problems most JVC HD-50, and HD-100/101/111 users are still having with FCP?

    All the best

    Dave
