Hi guys and gals. I’m working on another wedding reception slideshow as a favor for a friend, and I wanted to come up with something other than the Ken Burns “panning” effect.

I was thinking of doing something like a steady stream of photos that start from infinity in the center, coming towards the lens and off to the sides. I’m envisioning it as two “trains” of photos, one for the groom on the left… the other for the bride on the right. (Best way I can describe it would be — it would give the impression of walking down a hallway with pictures on the walls, although it would be the pictures moving towards the lens/viewer, not the lens moving past the pictures.)

This will only be a slideshow of still photos. No video this time around. I was gonna look into buying a slideshow program, but I’m sure SV8 can handle this. I’m just not sure how to do it. I’ve messed with track motion, but I must be doing some setting wrong. And when I try Pan/Crop on the individual photos… I can only seem to get one on screen at a time — even with every other picture on a second video timeline. I can’t seem to get the “train” or “filmstrip” effect I’m looking for.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

The answer is beyond a forum post and would take a tutorial to explain. There is a lot of work involved to do this but it can be done using either Track Motion or Pan/Crop. If you want two images then you’ll need to create two tracks and use Track Motion to resize and position the images left and right on each track. Then keyframe the motion and continue to do this for each image. You can probably copy and paste the keyframes once you get two of them working side-by-side. It’s a lot of tedious work.

If you do a lot of these… you can do this in 2 seconds with the push of a button with VASST Ultimate S Pro plug-in for Sony Vegas. Ultimate S Pro has a tool called MotoFoto (“photos in motion“) and one of the presets “Back Front (Left / Right)” will do exactly what you want. Just select the preset, load your photos, and press Apply. It will create all the tracks and events needed to keep the pictures coming at ya’.

In the interest of full disclosure I work for VASST so don’t take my word for it. Download the free trial which is fully functional for 15 days and use it on your current project and see how quickly you can crank out some pretty impressive slide shows. Even if you don’t buy the product, at least you can use it for your current project.

I was able to get this effect with Sony Production Assistant, using its motion tool. It gives you a lot of different options for all types of motion. The program also has many other useful features. It was well worth the money!

That’s another great option to try. 😉

I would do this is Particle Illusion. You can start of with any emitter you like and replace the particles with your images. Next you can adapt the movement of the images exactly as you like. Just a matter of seconds/minutes.

Not to deviate from Vegas, which I love (why does every editing job available want FCP editors?) But doing this effect in AE is pretty easy. If you have AE of course…. The 3d options in AE are great.
