  • Limitations of Vegas color grading and stepping up to node based system?

Newbie color grading question, if you have a moment …

Can anyone point me to a neat summary of the limitations of Sony Vegas for color correcting and why one would need to take a step to other software specifically for color correction/grading?

With Vegas you can easily adjust the order that FX are applied to a clip, but where does this approach fall down?

I understand that more sophisticated programs for color correcting use a “node-based system” where the the user has great control over the order and grouping of various effects and how they are applied to a clip.

Is this the main “step up” between such programs? Is there a good summary somewhere regarding the definition of nodes and how they affect workflow?

I am on a threshold of my understanding here and would really appreciate any links, posts or web references that could help me make this step.

I am using Vegas Pro 10.0 for various personal projects including drama, weddings, docos.

    Many thanks, Chris

I do a lot of color correction for our PBS television series and thanks to those in the know on the forum and with their help, I’ve satisfied PBS very well using
    levels
    color corrector
    color corrector (secondary)
    color curves
    in that order.

After all that and on the master bus we add the broadcast color corrector to be sure everything is within limits.
Also use the vectorscope and waveform to see where the colors stand. Gotten so I adjust colors by looking at those as much as I do looking at the video event.

Thanks Roger! I have had similar basic success with these parameters … was just wondering if I was missing something special by not diving into node-based options of Magic Bullet, After Effects, DaVinci, etc.

I did find a helpful blog post regarding order of post-FX as follows:

    https://www.hurlbutvisuals.com/blog/2012/01/7-tips-for-hd-color-correction-and-dslr-color-correction/

(See Tip#3 — Order of Operations)

    1. Remove artifacts and de-noise.
    2. Balance your shots by adjusting BLACKS/MIDS/WHITES, SATURATION and WHITE BALANCE.
    3. Relight within a shot using power windows or masks.
    4. Add gradients, diffusion and other lens filters.
    5. Add vignettes
    6. Grade your images
    7. Simulate a film stock of your choice
    8. Resize and sharpen

    Thanks again!
