Why is rendering and MPG compression so slow? And why does the MPG compressor apparently ignore the rendering and do it all from scratch?

Encoder settings influence speed…2 pass VBR is twice as slow as 1 pass CBR. Setting the Image Quality slider to 50 will increase speed greatly…almost realtime ona 3.0 P4.
Using Preview files as a source for Mpeg encoding would cause a generational loss.

If you have already rendered your project fro preview, then you might be willing to accept that generational loss. SO export a DV-AVI (should be very quick) and then put that on a sequence and export to MPEG. Should save one heck of a lot of time, but will have a tiny bit of loss. More than tiny if your text has not been optimized for the DV codec. But it will be fast.

I do want the quality. I just don’t understand why it is so strikingly much slower than in previous editions of Premiere Pro. Like 40 minutes to transcode an under one minute sequence of 3 video tracks!

If I am doing a CD project which involves MPEG videos, chances are there are a number of them. In that case I export each sequence or portion of a sequence as an AVI, then use the batch feature in Squeeze of Premiere 6.5 to render the MPEGs.
Why Adobe got rid of the batch utility is beyond me – it is very useful. -
40 minutes for 1 minute of source is far too long and there is a problem somewhere. I would expect that to be about a 3-5 minute process.
I always out put an avi submaster before encoding.Saves time and allows me to check each stage of the process.
BTW: Faster mpeg encoding is achieveable with the standalone MainConcept Encoder. I use this sometimes – especially if I need to Batch encode some avis. It can also batch encode multiple avis into one MPEG stream. This can be very useful.
