Can’t you just go into the Library package in the finder and do the same thing you did before. It’s a little more messy depending on how many events you use, but the structure is still there. You may have to grab the CurrentVersion.flexolibrary too. Not sure, but you could experiment.

Absolutely, but it wasn’t a great process before and now there’s a few more things to keep track of. I’d like to simplify the process so it’s automatic. And since the functionality is there with the auto-saves, there’s got to be a way to do it.

However, I can’t figure out a way to move the transcoded media and render files out of the library. Am I missing something? The auto-save feature already does this nicely, but I can’t figure out how to trigger it. If I could have more control over that, then I would put my autobackups in the cloud.”

Duplicate the Library to the Google drive.

Render files should not be copied.

Or delete render files before moving.

The Consolidate function is supposed to move managed media out of the Library. I also haven’t tested.

I can’t see any function within FCPX to duplicate the library. I could of course manually remove all of the renders and transcoded files, copy the library, then move them back in – but that’s tedious. I could also figure out a script, but then when I Get home I’d have to put all of my old renders and transcoded media out of the outdated library into the new library. I wish I could just tell FCPX to render and transcode to a scratch disk or something.

I do wish that render files could be stored elsewhere but there’s no “Copy” function?

Generated media still goes in to the Library similar to Events in FCP 10.0.

I hope to get to testing really soon.

This is what I’d like to test from the Media Management white paper:

“Managed and External Media
Media that you import into a specific library is stored inside the library and is referred to as managed media. Media can also be imported or copied to any location on a connected volume and linked to the library as external media. Multiple users can access this external media instantly on shared storage, including a storage area network (SAN) such as Xsan, Apple’s SAN file system.
If you want to share access to managed media, you can convert it to external media at any time using the Consolidate command. You can also use the Consolidate command to collect external media as managed media inside the library for easy transport or archiving.

Generated Media
Render files, optimized files, and proxy files are all considered generated media because the system creates them in the background after the original media has been imported. All generated media is managed media and is stored inside the library.
To save disk space, you can remove render files before moving or archiving a library. Copying a project between libraries does not copy render files because render files can be quickly regenerated.”

If generated media = managed media, it seems to me you’d be able to move the media out of the Library with Consolidate.

Yeah, you can’t. You can do a Finder duplicate, but that keeps everything. It would be great to have a way to trigger a backup, those libraries are the perfect size for EZ transfer… Feature request! 🙂

It looks like the quote I linked to earlier was a bit misleading.

Generated media is NOT managed media in that you can’t consolidate generated media out of the Library.

Generated media always stays in the Library.

So in your case, Lorne, you’d have to have the media external, and either generate media later, or not include the generated media in the upload.

Could you use another program to sync specific library files/folders to Drive? I use GoodSync all the time at work for syncing. https://www.goodsync.com/

I love the idea of syncing the Proxy folder and the events/project databases this way. Not sure if it would work, but it sounds quite cool.

Loren, maybe you can try restoring a backup?

The library backup files seem small.

You can set a backup location in prefs.

I think that would be a great solution… The problem is, there needs to be a “backup now” command or something. Otherwise you just sit and wait for the latest one to appear in “20 minutes or so”… which is what I’ve heard it does…
