    Budget: Sub-$1000.

    Hi,

I make short films with a couple of friends. We have a DVX100a Standard Definition camera and shoot at 24FPS using the Redrock Micro M2 35mm Adapter.

We have three Nikon mount lenses by Carl Zeiss: 2/35, 1.4/50, 1.4/85.

I have a 250-watt China Ball light from Film Tools and natural light at my disposal, but I’m limited in where I shoot because I don’t have a lighting setup.

I’m looking for something that’s portable and fairly easy to setup, which means one or two lights. I’d be enthusiastic about using three or more lights when I find a lighting specialist or a director of photography who knows his stuff locally, but I haven’t found that person yet.

    Thanks,
    Sean

    Sean,
you may have to piecemeal this to fit into your budget… the cheapest kits are maybe a used lowel ambi kit – with small stands, totas, etc, then add a chimera… look at the lowel catalogue, then start looking for used gear…
call B&H direct and see what they have.. get on their waiting list if you can… With budgets shrinking, crews getting smaller, and digital cameras getting faster, some people are probably getting rid of their bulky arri 1Ks or lowel DP lights. People I know have downsized their one man band kits to small peppers and a tota with an XS chimera (a great small softbox – not cheap though)
with 3 guys you should be able to easily handle a 5 light setup — volunteer as a grip/electric and learn more about lighting if you’re hesitating!!

    good luck.

    JB
