Hey everyone – was hoping you could help. I’m trying to achieve an effect very similar to this: https://andrewdavidwatson.com/filmsframe.html (scroll down to “Urban Current”, then click on “light show”)

It’s quite an interesting technique, but being so new to After Effects, I’m having trouble even knowing where to begin on this. Is anyone familiar with this sort of effect, or may perhaps have some advice? Thanks so much!

i appreciate ur input, but theres nowway this kid was able to shut down a philadelphia skyscraper for his 2 minute spec. theres gotta be some sort of way in after effects to control this, unless he applied some sort of simple vector paint to it

That was all done using photoshop and FCP. The final result was a mix of the orginial footage masked together with a large number of still frames. By merging the two squences i could control the building’s lights while still having traffic moving. That spec was a test shoot in a way for a larger project i’m working on right now (i’m in the last night of production! we get to roll a car over!!!). I’m about to beginning that whole post process again. hope that helps. thanks for checking out my work.
