i have a blue ball surrounded by a black ring. the blue ball is recieving and reflecting light but the black ring does not. it just show’s up as a black solid. i did a few different renders with different settings. i am sure there is an easy fix and that i am missing something obvious.

can anyone help or direct me to a tutorial?

what else is in the scene (for the ball and ring to reflect)? If nothing (just an empty scene otherwise) then the black has nothing to reflect but black so you get nothing. It should reflect the sphere if it’s in the right position to do so. That’s what the environment channel is for, place a picture in it to fake having a whole real environment. But that’s a huge topic in itself. Check out some of the materials here https://www.maxon.net/~deepshade/ (particularly the metals) and take them apart to see how they’re built.

I usually assign a tiny bit of reflection to absolute black objects (like 2%) to make them punch through more. Specular helps, too.
