I saw Aharon’s light writing tutorial, and was able to make the shape perfectly. Now, I have to do the same thing with text. I tried using part of Eran’s ‘Afterista’ tutorial to make the text and then create outlines, but that makes the text ‘bubble text’, as in it has space inside of it. I just need text that has no thickness, and is just a mask that can be stroked for use in ‘light writing’. Can anyone help?

    How do I do that?

Oh this is in AE? I thought you were talking about Illustrator. So I have to write out the text then autotrace it, and that should make a usable mask?

Auto Trace is still doing the same thing, it is going all the way around the shapes. I need just single line letters, like you would write with a pencil, not the ‘bubble letters’ that autotrace and create outlines make. I could draw it in Illustrator, but I don’t have a tablet and it would look very unprofessional.

Sometimes you just have to do stuff like this by hand. If you’re doing the text in the “light writing” style, it will be kinda jittery anyway, possibly hiding the imperfections of your linework.

You don’t need a tablet for this. Type out the text in illustrator, lock it, then use the pen tool to make the single line within each letter. A good knowledge of the pen tool and bezier curves will be indespensible here.

I’ve had to do this before, and it worked fine. If anyone knows an automatic way to get these basic paths inside the letters, please share 🙂
