I guess you could do a gradient ramp, add a stretched fractal noise onto it, animate the noise, spherize and use the result as a track matte to make a white-to-transparent layer.

Im not quite sure that i understand you, can you please make a sample project so i can see what you are suggesting?

Something like this. Got the seam to deal with and other details, but this was my basic idea.

I appreciate your effort, with your template I was able to recreate the same effect, probably the original one was created in the same way.
