  • Library format change between 10.5 and 10.6?

Posted by Brian Thomas on November 24, 2021 at 4:36 pm

I’m using 10.5.4 on my MacBook Pro mid 2015 and today I got my brand new MacBook Pro with, of course, Monterey (12.0.1). I downloaded FCP to the new machine and that, of course, is 10.6.1.

I have all my current projects on external drives, of course, and my question is, if I open one of those projects on the new machine, will it convert the library and thus prevent me from reverting to the older machine? Thanks!

Yes, if you open a library in 10.6.1 FCP will convert that library to the format required by the new release of FCP. That library can no longer be opened in 10.5.x.

It’s generally not a good idea to switch FCP versions for libraries in which you are still working, so you might want to finish working on any current projects in 10.5.4 on your old MBP if you can. If you must switch to your new MBP with work still in process you should probably make copies of all libraries that you will be updating, in case you need to return to working on your old MBP.

    Enjoy your new laptop!

I agree with Bill. I always change the name of the older library to “old-library name” and save it until I’m finished with the project.

Thanks so much both of you! Sound advice.
