Sorry, I can’t find my notes but there was a tutorial on how to show a title with (relatively fat) letters, and inside the letters you could see an animated video (on a lower timeline.)
I have a series of titles .jpg, white letters on black background, and a closeup video of flames from a fireplace, and would like to have the flames show though the letters.
I thought the .jpg titles could go on an upper timeline, and the video on a lower one, but there is some action necessary to modify the upper timeline (the titles) to make it happen.
As I recall, it was simple.
Any guidance would be most helpful

An explanation of how to do that is in the Vegas manual as well.

JPG is a bad choice for this; compression and lack of alpha channel make it less than ideal. PNG or TGA w/alpha are better.
Either way, either toss the mask generator on the media itself, or place the track containing the jpg file in a mask mode.
Child the track beneath, place the fire there.

I have a newsletter that explains this process using the standard media generator. I also have a newsletter on masking that might also be applicable to using your graphics.

    Gentlemen,
Thank you for your prompt and helpful replies. I could not find the box with the manual, so I downloaded it from Sony. As I vaguely recalled, indeed the manual did have the precise example of letters and flames. Besides the manual, the guidance you gave me was most helpful. I will also re-do the titles with .PNG instead of .jpg.
    Be well,
    John
