Leopard Issues – Found Some Already
Posted by Sean Oneil on October 27, 2007 at 2:44 amDid a fresh install on a PowerMac G5 2.7ghz. So far, here are the problems I found:
1) “Repair Permissions” in Disk Utility is messed up. It literally takes 10 minutes to finish and it looks like it’s locked up the whole time. This problem was mentioned by a lot of people on the Apple message board. Just know that it is working, so wait long enough and it will finish.
2) Blackmagic Decklink HD Plus w/ v6.6 (released for Leopard support). Some weird issue with turning off video desktop. I turned it off, and after a reboot it came back. I’ll have to test it some more before I post over there. Haven’t tested Final Cut with it yet because….
3) The big problem (for me at least). Highpoint RocketRAID 2224 card ain’t working at all. Despite the fact they released new drivers for Leopard today, the OS will not see the array. Invisible, even in Disk Utility. The Highpoint web utility works, and it sees the array just fine. System Profiler shows the card is installed and everything. I guess I’ll call them on Monday.
It’s a bummer. I was willing to live with minor bugs for a short while, but without the RAID it’s useless.

October 27, 2007 at 4:39 amThe Matrox MXO 2.0 drivers also don’t work in Leopard. The MXO box is dead. FCP Rescue 6 is broken. Mac Janitor broken. All Adobe apps seem to be opening up fine, but I will have to actually do some work in them to see if they are really stable. Repair permissions does take forever, and what I find amusing is the only warning it gives is the remote access update file from software update I received after installing Leopard! Fortunately I am leaving my main editing system alone for quite awhile until all the bugs are ironed out!

October 27, 2007 at 4:48 amDid you check with Matrox before performing the update? Unless they release drivers for leopard, you shouldn’t do it.
FCP Rescue 6 not working…darn it all!

October 27, 2007 at 4:49 amI, too, have found an issue that has me pulling at my hair, and I don’t have that much to pull.
I repaired permissions and experienced the same thing but just waited and all was well. My big problem, after installing FCP Studio 2, it does not read my FCP projects that I had saved.
I get an error message saying: File Error: Wrong Type.
Now here is a strange thing. One and only one of my former projects will open in FCP. I really don’t remember, but I believe it was the only one I made after the most recent ProApps update from Apple (Believe it was Pro Application Support 4.0.2) anyway it is the one that updated my system when I ran Software Update after installing Studio and all my other Apple programs.
I have no idea if this would cause the problem as the other projects were Not made with this latest update installed but I can’t believe that it would.
Any ideas? I really need my previous projects back or I will be spending a great deal of time trying to re-create them. (that is not making me a happy camper)
Thanks.

You should probably switch back to your clone of your Tiger system and continue working there for the time being. There was no FCP or Pro Apps update released last night and that’s one thing I’m waiting to see pop up on my laptop before I install Leopard on my editing systems.

October 27, 2007 at 3:29 pmIt’s a gutty move to update this early to Leopard, especially if you have uncompleted projects that you intend
to work on after the change-over.Doesn’t upgrading right now make you one of the early waves of beta testers? I know some people like to do this, but I shudder to think
about trying to figure out a new operating system with unfinished FCP projects pending.Best of luck you deserve a COW medal of some sort…

October 27, 2007 at 4:52 pmPerfectly safe to do if you have a cloned backup of your system drive under 10.4.
If we say “clone the system drive” enough then it will hopefully stop some poor person upgrading without backup and losing weeks or months of work!
My upgrade with BMD card and Sonnet SATA RAID card has gone OK so far – although I am expecting trouble ahead, but I’m not worried because I’ve cloned my system drive 🙂

October 27, 2007 at 6:18 pmAs posted in the AJA Kona forum, Adobe has announced that CS3 is not compatible with Leopard at this time. My editor said Photoshop worked on the machine at the Apple store, but that looks like it’s one of the only apps.
This is from the PDF on Adobe’s website:
Thanks to close collaboration between Adobe and Apple, most of the CS3 applications and
associated technologies, such as Adobe Bridge CS3, Version Cue CS3, and Device Central
CS3, are compatible with Mac OS X Leopard without requiring additional updates. However,
the following CS3 applications will require updates for full compatibility with Leopard:
Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional and our professional video applications, including Adobe
Premiere Pro CS3, After Effects CS3 Professional, Encore CS3, and Soundbooth CS3. We
expect to publish free Leopard compatibility updates for the video applications in December
2007 and for Acrobat 8 Professional and Adobe Reader 8 in January 2008.Walter Biscardi, Jr.

October 27, 2007 at 6:49 pmYes, I just did the Leopard upgrade on my MBP and Octo, which I have used the MXO box for. I usually only use the MXO with my laptop. These computers are usually used only for clients who have HDV projects (a very small minority!), and I used the MXO for external monitoring. So I took a chance. My main editing machine will remain “Leopardless” for quite awhile! The IO and Kona LH are rock solid on that one! On a good note, Boot Camp installed over the beta fine on the Octo, even though the install process was nothing at all like it was described in the set up instructions!

Same here now with the Adobe news. We’re an After Effects heavy shop so without After Effects support in Leopard, it will remain on our mail and internet machines only.

October 27, 2007 at 7:27 pmI may have spoken too soon. I have a mirror image of my previous system that is bootable and I thought I could boot from that disk, open each project and save it out to the new 10.5 system disk.
I did boot back into 10.4 and brought up FCP but I got the same response from the program that I did in the new system:
File Error:Wrong Type
Now I am at a loss…anyone have any idea and could it be the Pro Application Support 4.0.2 that I had installed?
Help…Please
Thanks,
David
