    Hey, all.

Working in PP CS3. I have a clip that I want to have a lens flare on. BUT, I want the lens flare to go in the opposite direct that the image is spinning while anchored at one point.

In order to do this, I’m trying to apply the lens flare effect to a transparent video clip above my video clip. BUT, when I apply the lens flare, it’s invisible. The only time I can see it is when I add the Alpha Adjust effect and invert the alpha…but then, of course, I get a black screen with a lens flare…

    What the deuce?

Keep in mind, you’re talking to an Avid editor here… I may be thinking wrong about this…

    Thanks!

Hmmm… I’m not in front of a Premiere machine at the moment…

My traditional workflow from way back before there was anything like a transparent video clip feature was to create a blank title and use that. i’m not sure if they behave differently.

I don’t know if applying it to a black clip and luma keying it would create smooth enough edges to have a smooth composite…

The best way to apply “opticals” such as lens flare, fire, etc., from a blank layer is to create the effect on black, then set the layer transfer mode to “screen” or “add”. I think you can do that in Premiere.

No question that screen works best, unfortunately screen and multiply had been broken ever since Premiere went ‘Pro’ and they finally simply removed them in CS3…

I think ‘add’ is in there…if not in keying, check an effect called “calculations”.

    Yeah,

I’ve been playing around with mattes and keying. The only thing I could make happen was with a color key, and then the lens flare was surrounded in “black” circles. Looked ridiculous.

I’m thinking about building it in After Effects (whew…gonna have to learn me some AE now! haha), and importing it as GFX. I’m just a newbie when it comes to AE. To me, it doesn’t seem like it should be a difficult thing to create. The only thing I’ve ever used AE for is adding Magic Bullet effects to clips and then importing them back into PPro.

Thanks for all the help, fellas! If you guys know any good AE tutorials, I’m all ears er, eyes at this point)!
