LCD TV/Monitor for editing
I know that the pro’s out there wouldn’t use an LCD screen to monitor output, but my work is not broadcast quality and I’m tired of the big box on my desk. Iunderstand the shortcomings, but it’s time for me to make the change. Is anyone out there using an LCD monitor with FCP? Any recommendations. I’ve been looking at the Sharp Aquos and the Sony. I’m running a quad 2.5. Thanks.

Since Sony discountinued the PVM CRT series, pros have been using the replacement, the Luna series, an LCD.
I’ve looked at the Sharp and it looks pretty good. A few pros I know have bought the Westinghouse
and Sceptre LCDs for non-critical work. I guess it’s gotten good reviews.

I meant the Sony Luma.

No pros that I know are using that. Everyone I know that has demo’d it hates the way it handles the blacks.
You can still find 14″ PVM monitors out there, we ordered one for our second suite already and may order a few more.

As much as you or I (or pros you know) may not use it (it looks to me like the monitor adds set-up, that’s how grey the blacks looked to me),
the reality is that lots of pros *are*. A friend at Abel told me how many are getting out there from them, and this may be a wild assumption
on my part, but I don’t think they’re getting sold to amateurs (not at the price point they’re at!).

See, that doesn’t work with HD color correction. The blacks need to show up as true black. From what I’m told it’s the nature of LCD technology. It’s always “on” so the blacks can’t be displayed as true black. That screws with color correction because I need to know just how “black” the shadows and blacks are. I find my Panasonic plasma screen can display true black and if my Sony PVM was not available, I’d trust that before trusting the Luma series.
Now I did see a few LCD’s out at NAB that were just amazing with how they handled the blacks, but they were in the $16,000 – $30,000 range.
