  • Layered procedural textures in C4D?

    Hello,

I am completely new to Cinema 4D. Until about a week ago I did all my 3D work using Maya, but seeing the fantastic integration between C4D and After Effects, I decided to give it a shot.

I am currently working on a project where the very long swirl/ribbon gets revealed through animated transparency channel (yes, I know, not the most original thing, but I am just getting started).

I want the reveal to have a certain degree of organic, random look to it, so I decided to go with a procedural B/W gradient with added turbulence. As the gradient animates from left to right (along the U axis of the UV texture), the geometry gets revealed. Simple enough.

Now, I want the edges of the geometry to have a fade/falloff effect.

In Maya I would simply create two gradients and multiply them to create the final texture for transparency. In C4D I cannot figure out how to do that.

I know it is possible to do layered textures using Body Paint, but the first question BP asks me when I try to do that is the size of the texture. Since my ribbon is very long, I would prefer to keep all the layers procedural and avoid either pixelization or extreme-res textures.

Here is an image explaining what I am trying to do:

    Is it possible?

    Hey again.

In the time it took board moderators to approve my question post, I have already figured out the answer 🙂

(I am using the “Layer” shader to nest all my procedural gradients together.)

In the alpha channel choose LAYER instead of gradiant. Then select the layer then you get the options you are looking for.
