After importing Photoshop CS3 text elements with layer styles to After Effects CS3, everything looks fine. But if I convert the text to “editable text” so that I can animate, the layer styles change dramatically. They are still there, but look very different, particularly if there are pattern overlays.
    Any thoughts on this?
    Thanks!

    Yes.
After Effects supports more and deeper aspects of layer styles (like advanced blending, blend if, custom profiles, patterns, etc) when you bring them from PS files than when you create them in AE. Essentially there are a few things that are supported in PSD files but can’t be created in AE directly because the UI elements are not there. When you convert PS text to AE text, it becomes a text layer just as if you created it in AE. So some of these “secretly supported” aspects of PS layer styles are lost.

Thank you for confirming that. I can quit worrying about “missing something” – or that I was doing something wrong!
