Layer blending in Avid Adrenaline?

Try putting a paint effect on the top layer of whatever you’re trying to blend. There are overlay options under the drop down menu in the effect editor window. (Sorry, I’m not in front of a machine right now, so this isn’t very precise.)

There’s a great plugin from Profound Effects, called “Transfer AVX.” They used to sell it for $50. Then it was free. Dig around on their site. If you don’t see it (as it’s been up and down from time-to-time), email them and ask them for a mirror site where you can get it. It’s a decent plugin, but unfortunately it’s a patch for a real wound in Avid’s NLE interface. There should be BUILT-IN TRANSFER MODES in the Avid NLE interface, accessible DIRECTLY FROM THE TIMELINE WITHOUT HAVING TO USE A PLUGIN!!!

Yeah, I know. While it’s now free (as opposed to $50 when sold by Profound Effects), I can’t stand the site that offers it, nor do I feel that they will continue the development that Profound Effects would have had they kept it. The new owners did, however, update it to the new AVX2 format. I guess that’s saying something.

I just couldn’t think of a way to tell him where to go get it, without saying the name of the site…so I referred him to PE, who originally made the plug.

Oak brings up a critical area which Avid needs to address, especially in yet to be released products like Symphony Nitris.

There are a few basic features which must be added to Avid’s native effects architecture. DVE soft drop shadows and transfer modes.

Symphony Nitris will have a DVE of impressive quality with a lot of realtime performance. The potential of the new DVE will be limited without native soft drop shadows and transfer modes. Having to use 3rd party plug ins for these staple visual effects will kill realtime performance and compromise workflow.

This becomes even more critical when working with material with custom shaped alpha mattes. Since the Avid is realitively restricted in layer to layer alpha usage, it is very important that the native DVE can deliver soft, variable blur, drop shadows. These shadows can also be centered and feathered to create a faux single color background glow.

So…SOFT DROP SHADOWS….TRANSFER MODES. How about it? What if I ask nicely.

The Composite transfer modes are also available in Boris FX if you don’t have BCC (and you should have BCC). Anyone NOT have Boris?
