Last Session Did Not Complete Properly – duh, really?
Two questions:
1. I’m so used to Vegas crashing every half hour I have a habit of saving before I ever hit the play button to preview a change. (crashes always seem to happen after I hit the play button) – I just wish I could move the Save button (or add one) down next to the player controls as a reminder and to save mouse hover time. Any way to do that sort of customizing?
2. Seeing that Vegas crashes so much I’m used to getting the message when I start Vegas that “The last session did not complete properly…” Funny thing is I get it all the time regardless of the last session. I can open a clean session, close it without doing a thing, and I still get the message. Is this a stray temp file somewhere causing this?

Just hit Ctrl/S to save it. I’m in the habit of saving every minute or so and it’s just become second nature.

Well, don’t crash.
Your #2 may be a clue to your root problem.
Are you running Vegas as administrator?
First, try resetting everything. Holding Ctrl + Shift while starting Vegas will reset all preferences and delete cached data prior to loading the program. If you have recently installed new hardware (especially a new graphics card), this is necessary because Vegas may be loading settings for your old hardware.
Next, hold the shift key and open the Preferences window. You will have a new tab: Internal – click on it. At the bottom of the Internal window where it says: “Show only prefs containing:” enter “path” (without the quotes). This shows you all the folders that Vegas expects to see. If any of these is pointing to a non-existent folder or drive, you can expect trouble. If any are pointing to an external device, I would expect problems. You must have write permission in all these folders. You may change these folders if any of the above cautions exist.

This “Internal” tab is like the registry for Vegas. You can easily hose your installation here, which is why the tab is hidden and why it isn’t mentioned in the manuals.Finally, if you can’t fix your PC, here is an autosave utility that hits CTRL-S for you periodically.

Steve, I do believe I am running as an admin… I’m the only user of this PC and it has no other accounts…though I’m not sure I to tell.
I did the ctl shift start and said yes to the reset and vegas opened with the usual “Last session did not complete properly” message. So I went into the hidden preferences and did not see any folders that were not available. When I quit and restarted I did not see the message. So maybe it finally lost whatever flag it was seeing.
Thanks for the link to that little ctl-s utility… that will be very helpful… I’ll never lose more that a minutes worth of work again.

Control Panel/Users will tell you.
One trick when installing windows is to leave the user name blank during installation. That makes it a one-user PC, always the admin.

WOW Steve! That’s brilliant! – I’ve been dealing with the Internal Prefs for, like, EVER, but this is so bleedin’ obvious……. OK, using your advise I’ve been able to chase down some totally archaic PATHS, and one to a removable HD, and I am going to review THAT one and others too. Presently it is saving Takes to a removable HD. What happens when I swap-out that HD? Madness . . . . .
SONY, it’s about time you gave us a Global PATHS Listings directory available to use to be able to adjust, which could consequently stamp on anything spurious getting in the way.
SCS have gotten back to me about weird errors that have a removable as part of a project that ISN’T part of the project anymore. And no, this Take PATH wasn’t suggested to me. But now I have some guidance to change this.
