  • Last minute… other side of the planet… system’s not working

So we did all of our pre-production and production in L.A. Most of our post is finished, but we’re here in London to do our final color pass at the installation. This is a 3D HD production.

Instead of hauling my Mac Pro all the way from L.A. to London, I had the (what I thought) clever plan of cloning my system onto a hard drive, renting a machine and installing my Kona card onto the rental machine. So far so good.

But when I go to open up Final Cut, first I tried booting from the external drive. This worked OK, but when I opened FCP (or any FCS app) it asks for my serial. Ok, so I try to put the serial number in and it won’t take it (this machine is not on the internet, btw).

So then I used the migration assistant. an hour later, I tried to open the app and all I get is bounce-bounce-bounce and then “The application quit unexpectedly.”

Any ideas? We’re supposed to go into the theatre in about 8 hours, I haven’t slept in about 36, and we’re only supposed to be here for three days.

    Yikes!!!

Sounds like the hardware might be slightly different between your machine and this one in London. If you know anyone in London with FCS install discs I think you should try installing from scratch with your serial number. Or, find a machine or facility with FCP already installed.

You might also try calling Martin Baker at https://www.DigitalHeaven.com in or near London. He’s a wiz.

Thanks! I’ll post something to them right away. Nothing seems to be working, but there is definitely a discrepancy between the machines (sadly, it was the best we could find on short notice!)

The serial number of an INSTALLED FCP app is tied to the hardware. I know this because when I had a bad logicboard replaced, and I tried to launch FCP, it wanted me to re-enter the serial number. So even though you have the cloned drive, it is tied to the machine.
