Kung-Fu Script Request
Posted by Roland R. kahlenberg on August 23, 2007 at 3:13 pmHi folks
Just wondering out loud if there’s a script available or writeable that creates a copy of a layer (duplicate) and then creates an Expression for all keyframeable properties of the duplicate layer that links to the source layer’s respective properties?
Cheers

August 23, 2007 at 4:26 pmI haven’t seen anything quite like that, but it should be mostly doable, althoug it will be a little trickier than it ought to be. You essentially need to create the string that would be created by the pickwhip for each property. Jeff Almasol’s rd_GimmePropPath script should be helpful and would be a good place to start.
Very interesting idea, by the way.

This doesn’t quite do what you want, but it’s close. It copies the selected Effects and puts them on a new solid with linked expressions. The author suggests making an Animation preset from the new layer (or copy/paste) to use them elsewhere:

Select the effects you want copied/linked then run the script. Check the “Link Keyframed Properties” radio button when the panel pops up.
It’s pretty nifty. I’d seen it, just didn’t realize it usefulness, thanks for asking the question.

August 23, 2007 at 10:22 pmThanks. Paul’s script did most of what was required. Just a wee bit of a manual tuck-in was required. Essentially, I’m a very productively lazy person. 😉
BTW, the idea for the Script came about as I was using 3D Stroke to create a “fly around a subject/object” effect. For such an effect, you’ll need two copies of the same layer. Same everythins except for the Z-clip’s Front and Back values.
Paul’s Script lacked the option to copy Mask(s) as well as Effects but that’s easy enough. Then there was the unhinging of the Expressions for the Z clip-values and re-hinging to a different set of properties.
All in all, it’s a great-time saver. Just what Kung-Fu Scripting is all about!
BWT, what were your thoughts with applying such a Script?

August 24, 2007 at 4:21 pmI just realized its a quick and foolproof way to make a master layer that controls layer effects in other comps. Foolproof is import, since I’m easily fooled.
