  • Kona Output – Correct Aspect for 2k footage on HDSDI out

Posted by Rory Hinds on December 17, 2010 at 10:58 pm

    Hi there

I have a Kona 3 and am working on a RED project that is 2240×960.
I’d like to be able to play out the footage in the correct aspect ratio but I can’t seem to find the setting.
It outputs fine but stretches it out to full the 1920×1080 screen and I’d like it to maintain the aspect ratio and not stretch the picture out.

Please does someone know how to set this up in Final Cut Pro.
The strange thing is when I stop the footage and its parked on a frame it outputs at the correct aspect ratio (2.33) but when i press play and play the footage it stretches it out to 16×9

Where did that aspect ratio come from?

On Red one, 4480×1920 actually gives a 2.33:1 aspect ratio.
I’m working in 2k and not 4k so the frame size is 2240 x 960

Got ya. You shot 4.5k WS. Threw me for a second there.

I’d drop it in a 2k 2:1 sequence then use the 2k crop function in the control panel. Your footage will be letterboxed of course.

What about grading 2240×960 in Color. How should the Kona be set up for that?

[Steve MacMillan] “What about grading 2240×960 in Color. How should the Kona be set up for that?”

You won’t be grading at that size as you will be accessing the 4K data, but keep the 2K config in Color (set video output to 2k). You will change the sequence size in Color (but not before) and double check your Geometry room to make sure Color is behaving in terms of scaling.
