The problem with adopting technology a year after it’s introduction, is that all the discussion as to how to implement it is all over.
We got our Kona card in anticipation of some flavor of HD a while ago, and have recently purchased an XDCAM HD system (350 camera, 70 deck).
So my question revolves around the proper setting both in the Kona software and in FCP. Are there settings I need to adjust from going to an 8bit apple uncompressed world (from BetaSP) to an XDCAM world? How do I make the most of the hardware accelerations of the Kona Card?
Is there some workflow that works best? I can’t be the first to combine XDCAM HD, FCP and Kona LHe.
Also, is there some resource online where some of the technical issues with the workflow have already been hashed out?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Depends on how you want to work. If you want to ingest file based and work camera native, setup your XDCAM HD easy setup and just set your video output to 1080i29.97 8-bit. This will let you monitor and you can print to non-XDCAM decks (HDCAM, etc) using it.

If you want to work in a non-MPEG format, use the deck to ingest via component HD to Apple’s ProRes and work natively there. Print to whichever deck you want via component or SDI (with or without downconvert)

The Kona series cards handle XDCAM HD very well. I can’t answer for the LHe personally but I’m sure that it has the same acceleration as the Kona 3.

You can ingest your footage using the Sony Transfer software 1.1 or you can Log and Capture into ANY codec. The workflow is up to you.

BUT, if you are going to be doing XDCAM HD only and want to do it natively, make sure that you set your renders to ProRes422 in the preferences.

    Ok,

so I’m working natively in within all the set ups given me in the EZ set up, with the exception of renders in the Sequence settings.
What about other settings where you decide if FCP or the Kona card are handling effects, or real time, etc.
And the settings on the Kona control panel. Anything there to keep in mind?
    Thanks,

I you use the Easy Setups then the Kona card will view any of your work on your broadcast monitor. As for handling effects, that would be FCP. AJA Kona cards do not do any effects, just realtime viewing on your broadcast monitor.
