OK…so here I am, color correcting away with a nice solid image. What I am used to seeing. Then I have to output a DVCPRO HD tape, so I connect the deck to the card via HD SDI, deck control via RS-422…and after a quick call to Walter, figured out how to get the HD SDI signal to it.

    All was good….only, it wasn’t.

The image on the screen was flickering. Every couple of seconds, the image jumped. Odd…OK. Walter and I go thru the menu items and all seems to be exactly how he has it. I even route the other HD SDI signal to the REF in for reference…same flickering. I try the Composite signal to REF in…flicker. OK…maybe it is just while it is sitting still. So I output…and the flicker happens, and knocks audio out for a second or two. Obviously something was wrong. So I connected the deck via firewire and output that way. No flickering…no issues. Wham bam thank you ma’am.

I dash to FedEx to deliver the tape, take my time getting back (ahhh….weight off shoulders). Come back to the bay, quit FCP, turn off the deck, disconnect HD SDI from the deck and plug it back into my monitor…so it is directly from Kona LH into monitor. Turn on monitor…launch FCP. Go to the restroom…come back.

    Flicker…flicker…flicker.

What the…? So I switch to the other HD SDI out…flicker. The flicker was from the card, not the deck. So I quit…restarted…launched FCP (got a snack…large series of projects)…flicker, flicker, flicker. I can hold a RAVE with this monitor as the special lighting. Kids on EX can go into a trance in front of this thing.

I plug in the COMPONENT cable to the component ins on my monitor. Flicker…flicker…flicker.

Needless to say I cannot color correct.

    Help?

    Followup:

I load in DV footage, change the output to 525 @ 29.97….same HD SDI connection…and there is NO flicker.

    What deck?

What was your reference set to on the Kona C.P.?

What was the decks internal reference set to?

    What easy set up?

Does any other format work (i.e., not flicker) besides DVCPRO HD?

    Okay, just saw that post.

    How about UC HD?

OK…just solved it. My BRILLIANT pal Pat Sheffield diagnosed it from my description.

“Are there any preferences about genlock? Could it be confused with no genlock signal? Frame rate stuck at 24 or something”

GENLOCK. When trying to get the signal to the deck (that Walter said “there are buttons on the front for input signal) I must have changed PLAYBACK TIMING in the AJA CP to VIDEO IN…where it said NO SIGNAL. I put it back on FREERUN and picture locked.

    MAN…

I only have an SD one…not an HD one. Which is why I can layback to DVCPRO HD just fine, but when I need to output to HDCAM or D5, I go to the post facility.

I need to land a series to pay for the nice things, like that and hardware scopes…

[Shane Ross] “I only have an SD one…not an HD one.”

That’s all I have, but fortunately the 1400 accepts both HD and SD sync. Of course now you can pick up the spiffy AJA Tri-Sync generator for what, $400? I think they start shipping soon.

You only need tri sync for 1080 23.98 masters. An SD BB will work just great with a DVCPro HD deck and your Kona.

    Sweet!

And I did another output this morning via HD SDI and it worked fine. It was that stupid playback sync. That’s what I get for playing with settings.

    Nice deck…I want one!
