KONA 3, Sonnet D800 8TB, Mac Pro 8 core. Works great.
This is just a mention of a good experience for an upgrade.
We were a G5, 2.5 dual, OS 10.3.9, OT 7.1.6, FCP 5.1.4,
1.6 TB MacGurus SATA with Sonnet card, Aurora Pipe Studio, ALL SD.
( I could not upgrade to FCS2 or OS or QT because the Pipe Studio
was at the end of it’s life and drivers were not going to be made).
My old system was working flawlessly but could not upgrade to HD.New system, Mac Pro 8 core 3 Ghtz, OS 10.4.10, QT 7.2, FCP 6.0.1,
8 TB Sonnet D800 at RAID 5 (interleave set to 64), KONA 3.Everything seems to be working fine. We are still operating in the SD world.
We’ll be producing in HD in about a month when we get our Panny 1400 deck,
HD monitoring, including WF monitor and either JVC 24 inch or Panny 26 inch
monitoring. So for now, no issues with HD. We still output to our Digibeta A500
and DVCPRO 440 via SDI. The house also has a brand new AVID MC
HD Adrenalin with another Sonnet D800 8 TB RAID 5. The AVID folks were
pretty weird at first when I wanted to the Sonnet D800, but came around
after Sonnet spent some time with Key Code Media (where
we bought the AVID from in Seattle ). We bought our FCP system from Frank Kergil at Media Tools in Bellevue. Highly recommend them for those of you
in the area.Very happy so far. And I was apprehensive because I really liked the way
the Aurora Pipe Studio operated but alas they are no longer with us.

The Sonnet D800 is based on the AMAZING SAS host controller card from ATTO – this is the ATTO R380 card. ATTO will update the firmware for this card in the next few weeks, and make it even more amazing.
We are in a unique time, where there are so many great storage companies out there (all who are advertising on Creative Cow.). Creative Cow is THE SOURCE to find hi end, inexpensive suppliers for all of your video system hardware needs.
With that said, when will Sony start charging $4000 for a HDCam VTR (just kidding !).

RIP Aurora. We still thing the Pipe Studio was the best SD card/BOB on the market. It had a few bells and whistles that the Kona series never will. Alas, we’ve had to upgrade all our systems to Kona 3’s over the past year to handle all the HD work we do know.
The guys at Aurora have all moved on to other things. It was too bad they didn’t get enough support from Apple. They were great engineers and code writers, but lacked in sales and marketing prowess.

What a good question.
The ATTO R380 is FINALLY getting it’s updates to allow for RAID failure alarms and pop up windows. I was just told about this the other day. Once this actually works, it will add another established killer company into the competition.
Because Sonnet uses this product, it will add great credibility back to Sonnet’s RAID 5 solution.Bob Zelin

Nothing yet on when it will come out, but the main thing it will have is an alarm system to tell you when a RAID drive has failed. Right now we check our ATTO Configuration Tool once a week to ensure that nothing has failed.
