Kona 3 Question – need help!
Posted by Markfuta on March 10, 2006 at 5:02 amHello,
I have HDCAM 1080p24 footage that I want to digitize to DVCPRO HD 1080i60 in FCP. I’m wondering if the Kona 3 will be able to do this real-time.
I also am wondering if the Kona 3 will be able to output a native HDV project to HDCAM.
Sincerely,
Mark Futa

March 10, 2006 at 4:28 pmsure – play back your HD Cam tapes in a VTR like a Sony JH-3 or Sony HDW-F500 that has 2:3 pulldown (so you are going in at 59.94, not 23.98), and capture at DVCProHD. It will work great (in real time !).

How about the HDV native project. Can I leverage Kona 3’s features to somehow get it to play back out to a HD CAM deck?

March 11, 2006 at 1:58 pmThere is probably a better answer than this, but if you use the Kona 3 and HDV, and use the AJA HD10A to ingest the analog HD signal to HD-SDI (using the converter), you simply do a 8 or 10 bit uncompressed 1080i project (not HDV), and this will absolutely spit right out to an HD Cam VTR. Like I said, there is probabaly a better workflow answer, as an HDV Project will take up less storage than an uncompressed HD project.

Unfortunately, I’ve come in very late in the editorial process. All the material has been digitized at 1080i60 HDV. While that thought has crossed my mind about redigitizing, the media as it stands is over 2TB of HDV. I don’t think I have the time or the storage to go with a different codec.
I’ve purchased the Kona 3 board and have had my tech guy install it. I’m frankly blown away and a bit scared by all the features that it offers.
AJA has been really helpful, especially Rudy in tech support.

March 11, 2006 at 6:48 pmThe Kona LHe I reckon will out-put HDV to SD SDI or HD SDI without a HDV-conform. This should also hold true for the Kona 3, I reckon.
