Kona 3 G5 Dual 2GHz and DVCProHD
I’ve been asked to look into setting up a G5 Dual 2Ghz system to be able to online HD programs.
AJA’s Kona3 is what I use where I work most of the time and I like the ‘it just works so well’ factor about it.
So AJA say that the Dual G5 system is at the bare minimum spec needed. Step 1
Step 2: When dealing with DVCProHD footage shot on varicam, with varying frame rates (In PAL land so all needs to go to 25 = fun .. wasn’t HD supposed to get rid of all this ?)
The kona3 card can remove all of the duplicated frames from varicam cam variable frame rate footage and convert to 25fps as it goes .. so that 25 fps footage goes to 25 and 60fps footage also goes to 25 but slowed already.
So this card is perfect … do i need Final Cut Pro 6 for this fantastic sorting out of horrible varicam footage?
(ie the remove duplicate frames option)
Currently they have and are happy with Final Cut Pro 5.something.So I guess in summary:
For varicam footage with variable frame rates etc
will
Dual G5, FCP 5 and kona3 do the trick
or do i need to
a) upgrade to FCS 2
b) upgrade tower to mac pro
c) upgrade tower to mac pro and get fcs 2(side note .. does anyone know if io hd will do the same removing duplicate frame trick?)

You can’t run a Kona 3 in a G5 Dual 2.0. You would require the AJA Kona 3X which is the PCI-X version of the card.

I think the important thing is removing those pesky duplicate frames, and whether fcp 5 can do that with the kona3x?
Prores would be nice of course, but so would a nice shiny octocore … and some diamond shoes … and a beer fridge for sunny days.
That last ones not such a bad idea actually ….

This will tell you what version of OS and drivers you will need for FCP5.
You will need to stay on Tiger and use v3.4 or lower of the Kona drivers.

For what it’s worth, I run the Kona LH on my Dual 2.0 G5 and it removes the duplicate frames so that I get 23.98 from the 59.94 varicam tape.
So, it should work fine.

I’m pretty sure that the minimum for ProRes is a G5 Quad. OTOH, any Mac Pro will do ProRes, and you would then work with a Kona 3, rather than the Kona 3X.

…. so the existing G5 will work but is at the minimum requirement, still not sure if I should insist on upgrading to more powerful tower …
I want to but then again i’m not the one paying for it … I just have to work on it … rendering forever … this is looking more and more like an upgrade recommendation 🙂

I edited 10bit Uncompressed HD on my dual 2.0 G5 and a Kona3X. It works. DVCPro HD works on it as well.
ProRes will not.
