Kona 3 and 2K – 2048×1080 at 23.98fps is it possible
Hell all,
We in the pre production of a feature film shoot and wish to do the edit using FCP and Kona3. The format will be 35mm, most likly go with 2.40:1 format. And hoping to transfer this to 2k.
Considering 2K 2048×1556 is esstentially 4:3 ratio requiring data rate of 300MB/Sec and 2048×1080 is almost 16:9 which is 1.85:1. and data rate approx. 200MB/Sec. and we are going 2.40:1.
So I guess the begging question is, anyone out there doing 2k realtime edit at 24fps in fcp, if so, please share your success stories and pipelines/process for this workflow.

Regarding your question about using 2048×1080 for the 2K workflow:
2048×1080 is really a Digital Cinema specification and if you get a negative scanned, that’s usually going to be to 2048×1556 in order to give you the whole negative. If you truncate the source data that you work with from the outset you’ve no real room for Y axis adjustments (up and down on the image) that would be possible if you had taken in the whole 2048×1556. This point may be worth considering.Most facilities will scan to the 2048×1556 dimensions by default as well. And yes, 2048×1556 2K files at 23.98fps will be roughly 300MB/sec so you will need a drive array adequate to handle this (preferably some kind of RAID with that kind of speed and controllers with 512MB cache.)
Whether you work in 2048×1556 or 2048×1080 you will be able to watch the footage on an HD display or an SD display using the 2K Crop function in the Kona Control Panel in conjunction with setting the appropriate Primary and Secondary formats.
