    Hi all,

Thanks for all the great input on that SDX thread it’s all super helpfull. Here’s another question spinning around my skull that I thought I’d throw out.

So we want to go with the Kona 2 for FCP. I’ve got an oportunity to pick up a G5 2ghz pre-loaded with 8gigs of RAM for $2k. This sounds like a great deal to me, but I was under the impression that the Kona2 was a PCIX card and I don’t believe the dual 2ghz g5s have PCIX.

So… that having been said…I’m seeing that alot of folks on this board have rigs with a Kona 2 on a dual 2 ghz G5. So what gives? Is the Kona 2 compatible with PCI? Do the dual 2ghz have PCIX? I’d hate to buy this machine and realize I’d made a fatal error.

Thanks again for the help…It’s greatly appreciated.

Slot 4 on the original G5 Dual 2.0’s are the PCI-X slot, but you can run the Kona 2 in any of the slots. In my case I’m running two of those machines, one of my machines has the K2 in Slot 3 and my Fibre Channel card in slot 4. The other machine doesn’t have a Fibre Channel card so the K2 is in Slot 4.

Basically if you have high speed storage such as a SCSI, Fibre or SATA RAID array, you want to put that card into Slot 4 to get the maximum data throughput of your media.

Todays Dual 2Ghz does not have any PCIX slots, all three slots are PCI. This is not good for a KONA2.

Previous generation dual 2.0 did in fact have three PCIX slots. The speed of those slots was 133Mhz on the single top slot and 100Mhz shared on the two lower slots.
