  • Kona 2 HD-SDI to FCP 5 Images look bad when exporting to DVD

Ok going to try to explain this right and quick.
    System:
    G5 2.0 / Kona2 / Promax 8 disk Sata raid/ FCP 5.0.3 / OS 10.4.3. / HDW 500 HDCAM deck with SDI I/O HD and SD

When going to log and capture and setting Kona2 to input passthrough, the shots from the HDcam look fine on my HD monitor. After I capture clips and lay in sequence(AJA Kona 2: 1080i 29.97 8 Bit) the shots in my FCP viewer look horrible like an interlace problem. When I play from the timeline and view on my HD monitor the clips look better, but there are still added “moray” on shots with any tight lines or heavy in contrast. Thus once my show is done and we export for DVD the DVD looks like crap. AJA says they have no clue, Promax has no answers yet and Sony does not think it is the deck. I have replace the Kona 2 card, cable and also the SDI line from my deck (we don’t have k-box we go direct).

If anyone is using a similar sytem and hardware I would love to know if you experience any of thesse problems.

    Thanks!

When this computer was first setup did you just add the KONA2 card to an existing OS install or did you perform a completely clean install. Trying to diagnose demons is a waste of time. It doens’t take that long to perform a clean install on an external firewire drive of just the basic FCP and KONA drivers to see how the card performs then. Just a thought.

    Other ideas:

RT Extreme in FCP5 supports uncompressed HD at 8 bit so make sure your RT Extreme settings are set to High (Quality) and Full (Frame Rate). If this isn’t correct it will cause viewing quality issues.

On the FW500 HDCAM deck what is the system frequency set to? 29.97 PsF or 29.97 Interlaced?

The all to familiar – Trash your FCP preferences. FCP Rescue – on Apple software page is a great utility to keep around.

    Hope this helps,
