    Hi:

Let me preface this by saying I’m more of a post-production, After Effects and Lightwave sort of guy, not a DP.

We’re having preliminary discussions with a client about compositing talent into a virtual set (in After Effects). I believe the client owns a few HD cameras, but I don’t know in what format they record. I’m guessing it’s some flavor of HDV or similar. I’m worried about trying to pull a clean key off of such footage. Would we get better results if they were to record directly to an AJA Ki Pro with the Pro Res 422 HQ codec?

    Thank you.

this is indeed a good solution.

The more color info you have the better the key will be.

Any 422 codec will have a better result than other HD codecs like HDV, XDCAM, …

If the client uses a Sony EX1, JVC HM-700 or similar camera the HD-SDI output will give a full 422 signal for the KiPro to record while the onboard recording on the memory cards will be 420 or 411.

    In short go for it.

    YES.
A 10bit i-frame 4:2:2 signal is better than anything you will get in post short of HDCamSR /DPX/UC content. This would be better than any tape based recordings and better than all but a handful of tapeless formats ( RED, Phantom,SI,ARRI that record data at more than 10bits)

The content captured over baseband from your camera will higher in luma and chroma and the signal is virtually always sent out prior to encoding any compression.

Ah, the joy of the pun…

Thanks for the replies. I’ll float this approach by the producers.
