Keying without plates
How unusual is it to build mattes without the completed background in place?
In my limited experience, it’s very difficult to work the matte’s edges without seeing them in their actual place of business. Is there such a thing as an all-purpose temp background? Black and white checker board, maybe?
Ideally, I’d like to build and render out mattes that will require little or no messing around when the plates are ultimately delivered. How far can I reasonably take it?

Not that one. It’s more like grey and white, isn’t it. I meant a big fat black and white thing, size-adjustable (which I found in the effects) I heard that white works well. But I tried that once and wound up with a white halo around the edges when I then put up a black background. I guess checkerboard is the way to go.

Maybe I misunderstood, but I check my keyed objects over a simple white to black gradient, which i move around a bit.

A gradient is a good idea, actually. Better than checkerboard. Should of thought of it.
