When I import an effect like and explosion into my footage, how to I keep it from following the camera? I need it to stay in the exact same place throughout all of the footage.

    Thanks

To leave it as 2D, you switch off the little cube on the layer. Check the help regarding 3D.

A 2D layer is like laying a picture on top of your TV screen – it’s not affected by the camerawork of the show you’re watching.

Ok i understand that….i guess i worded my question wrong. i need the picture i import to stay in one spot during the entire scene. i think i have to use keyframes to keep it in the one spot while the camera moves. i just need a solid way to keep it in the exact spot instead of just trying to use my eyes each frame to place it where i want it to stay.

I’m sorry, I don’t know what you’re dealing with here.

    – AE 3D camera?
    – shot footage with moving camera?
    – if you import an image, it will stay in one place in the comp unless you animate it. So are you trying to make it stay in one place in the world of the footage? Say, to glue it to a TV set as seen by a moving camera?

If we’re talking about the last one, you need to track the footage, maybe with corner pinning. Check the help for that. If that doesn’t work, you need matchmoving software such as Syntheyes.

    Did we solve it?

I found another way to ask what I’m trying to figure out. Heres an example. Say I have a video of a hand moving back and forth across the screen. Now say i want to make a circle and set keyframes so it covers the hand. Is there anyway i can set a point on the hand so the circle knows to stay on that point without having to set keyframes for each frame. I just want it to flow good with the hand movement

    That would be motion tracking.

Check out how Andrew uses it to keep the sky in the “same position” relative to a moving foreground in this tutorial:
