    up until the other day I was able to select tracks by using the number pad and either command or option and now I can’t do that anymore.
    Perhaps I inadvertently hit a wrong key and turned this off….any ideas?

    go to keyboard settings.

    Is that the color red you want to use?

    command + number pad activates autoselect on video tracks,
    option + number pad activates autoselect on audio tracks.

    autoseelct affects copy / paste operations,
    but not edit operations. (viewer to timeline)

    edit operations are controlled by track targeting.
    F6 + number for V1
    F7 & F8 + number for A1 & A2
    (can be number pad, OR top-row numbers)
