    Hi there
I am new to this forum and new too to Final Cut Pro 7. I’m trying to record live footage with some camcorder I can borrow by a friend of mine. I did use a Panasonic DX100 DV and I’m trying to use a JVC GY-HD111 in HDV. But I cannot capture any video from the JVC. Here are the steps I follow:
    Open Final Cut Pro 7
Opening Easy Setup–> HDV 720p25 FireWire
    Opening Log&Capture window
    Set to Capture—> Now.

And the result is that it begins capturing, but after the first frame it goes to “Searching for media” and does not capture anything more. It does capture fine if I switch to DV mode, though. I tried to modify things in the Audio/Video Settings page, trying to switch Capture Mode to HDV 720p25 FireWire, HDV 720p25 FireWire Basic, HDV FireWire, HDV FireWire Basic, trying to set the device to HDV, HDV FireWire, HDV Firewire Basic, HDV ProRes… Nothing worked. And I’m going nuts.
Other capture modalities, such as Capture Batch or Clip do not work because it asks for the tape, (Tape not treaded). BUT I DO NOT WANT TO USE THE TAPE!!!
I managed to capture videos in DV, switching the Device Mode to “Non controllable device” and using Capture Now. But I cannot do the same in HDV mode because FCP wants both Capture and Device modes set to HDV, or both not to HDV. So what?

I read that there were some problems with an Apple HDV codec, with an old version of quicktime and FCP 6.0.4 (or something). I have Final Cut Studio (FCP 7.0), and Snow Leopard (so Quicktime X & Quicktime 7.6.3.

You can’t capture HDV live. Some cameras will allow you to downconvert, which may act as a DV camera and capturable live.

    All the best,

But is it a FCP limit or is it impossible in general? I’m actually new to this world, but I’m almost sure that Edius can record HDV live. Gonna Investigate about it…

Did you use a non-controllable device preset when you tried to capture the HDV material?

There is no preset like that, unfortunately. And, If I want to capture HDV material I have to set Capture and Device modes to HDV, or FCP complains about that. I tried to set “non controllable device” in Device mode and “general capture” in capture mode, but did not work (and FCP did not see the camcorder either)

That’s what I was afraid of. In my experience it really does not work with HDV cameras.

Veescope live will allow you capture the 720p from this camera as a Quicktime. You won’t be able to capture live with FCP.

It has a few other features too, scopes and live chroma key.

Problem solved using the HDV 720p25 Preset in Easy Setup and then using the Free Timecode, both in the Final Cut Setting and in the JVC Setting. Thanks for all the help

    Hi Andrea Nuzzo,

Could you please explain the steps in regards to “using the Free Timecode, both in the Final Cut Setting and in the JVC Setting.” Because I want to try the live signal from my JVC GY-HD101E and I’m having trouble trying to configure this “Free Timecode” you speak of.

    Thanks!

You should look for a panel, in you JVC cam, which lets you switch the different timecode generators (should be something like REC, FREE and EXT). I don’t know where it is in your model, mine has this controls in the insider part of the LCD slot.
