I just upgraded to OS10.4, did the 10.4.1 update (and all the other updates along with it, there was a pro-application support update too) and now my FCP4.5 is acting really strange. (I did a basic upgrade, not an erase or anything like that. Did not change FCP at all, just the OS)

First, some of my more complex sequences (with 3 or more video tracks) will not play properly. They will play but when clicking around in the timeline the canvas window will not update with where the playbar is at. The mouse arrow will continually flash white as if it were contiuously rendering the current frame but it never actually renders the frame and i just sit on a black screen. All my system and user settings are correct and intact.

So I trased prefs and render files, tried to re-render and that didn’t work, got a General Error and Out of memory message. Then closed the sequence and when I tried to open it again it said No Movie File or something like that and wouldn’t even open the sequence!!! (BTW G5 2GHZ w/1.5GB RAM)

Some of my keyboard commands don’t work anymore. Sometimes the app. really slows down to a crawl. All kinds of weird stuff.

So, should I do a re-install of FCP? If so, what’s the best way to get the cleanest possible re-install of an app? Like how do you make shure you completely erase the old app and get a crisp new install?

Or Should I do some sort of different install/upgrade of Tiger? If so what’s the cleanest way to do that?

Arghhh, i hate doing OS upgrades. But hey, widgets are cool.

You should do a clean install of any new OS I think. Do it, it’s worth the peace of mind. You can even buy another drive and install from the ground up if you want to.

If you erase it’s best. If you choose “archive and install” from the options button, it just replaces the OS.

Better backup your docs right now… just because.

Quicktime 7 may the culprit. It’s installed with Tiger. Not sure that you can run Tiger without QT 7 but it might be possible. I upgraded to Final Cut Studio last week using archive and install and had so many problems I downgraded later in the week. Things that worked in FCP HD did not work after the upgrade to FCP 5. I suspect QT 7 will be found to be the ultimate source of most of the problems upgraders are having with FCP 5. I’m waiting for a bug fix of both FCP 5 and QT 7 that actually works before trying FCP 5 again.
