I’m not sure if this is solveable or not. I juat got a new computer. AMD 4400 64-bit dual-core processor (2.31Ghz), 6 gigs of RAM, 2TB worth of hard drive space, ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics with 256MB of video memory onboard. Running on Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit. I downloaded Vegas vers. 6 from the Sony Media software site, along with the AcidPro and Soundforge that I also own. They work great, but I’m having some problems getting an external display to work through firewire with Vegas. Incidentally, I downloaded Vegas to the 32-bit section of my C drive, as I’ve heard through this forum that folks can only get version 6 of Vegas to run in 32-bit. I thought the problems might be my display setting of 1600×1200 (I’m working with SD video on an SD project here), so I scaled the display settings down and tested each time. Still have the same problem. I can play the timeline okay, but when the Vegas play bar is set on an individual frame, it won’t display on my external CRT monitor through firewire…just on the preview display within Vegas. Someone please help me!!!!

My only advice is to complete your new computer upgrade by upgrading your Vegas software as well. It really doesn’t make sense to try and get old software that doesn’t support Vista working on a new computer. Of course if this is just a hobby and you have plenty of time to kill, then keep trying.

Vista 64 had it’s fair share of firewire problems and I ditched it for Windows 7 as soon as it came out. See if in your device manager, Vista installed a firewire network device. If it did, try disabling it and see if that helps. Also make sure the firewall isn’t blocking the firewire port because of this stupid network device.

Personally, I wouldn’t have put Vista on a new computer. Windows 7 is light-years ahead in terms of stability and usability. But that’s up to you.

I went ahead and upgraded to Vegas Pro 9. Still having the same problem. It just seems to be on having an external display show a single frame from the timeline, via firewire. The timeline plays back through the firewire to the camera I have hooked up via firewire as a capture device (I have an old Canon GL2 with a broke zoom rocker switch). But I have trouble recording back to tape through firewire also. I am using the firwire connection on the motherboard, so I think I will try installing the ADS Pro firewire card from my old computer and see if that works.
